Position Title: Bio-Cementation Scientist 1 (NOC 21110) 

 

Job Duties 

  • Supervise laboratory technical personnel, medical clinical personnel, graduate students, research scientists and other professionals (1 to 2 people) 

  • Participate in the commercialization of new products 

  • Collaboratively design the scope of technical projects using experimental design principles 

  • Candidate will perform Biocementation experiments using enzymatically or microbially induced calcite precipitation (E/MICP) 

  • Candidate’s primary research will be on pellet and briquette formation for the mining industry. 

  • Candidate’s secondary focus will be on mine tailing stabilization, dry stacking the tailings, and dust control 

  • Additional responsibilities include isolating organisms producing urease or other carbonate-forming enzymes or pathways, bioaugmentation, and/or bio stimulation of these organisms in various geological materials. 

  • Candidate should be well versed in X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and UCS-Instron, Falcon, Needle penetration techniques 

  • Organize conferences and meetings 

  • Develop cadence and clear communication of progress on experiments 

  • Manage 2-3 laboratory projects at the same time 

  • Achieving 80%+ of key milestones on time and budget or go/no go decision 

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on projects including bioinformatics and analytical characterization. 

  • Embrace transparency; communicate early and often even for bad news 

  • Consistent and clear communication with Allonnia technical team as well as partners and collaborators  

  • Demonstrate good written communication skills for findings and reportsAttend and present in 1-2 technical conferences per year. 

  • Gather and prepare samples for laboratory analysis 

  • Participate in the technology transfer from Allonnia to our deployment partners. 

  • Maintain records of executed work and activities as outlined per Standard Operating Procedures and support QA, QC, and regulatory requirements. 

  • Perform maintenance on laboratory equipment including setup, cleaning, and appropriate care of equipment. Ensure safe work practices and maintain efficient and effective lab policies. 

 

Educational Requirements 

Ph.D. in Microbiology, Sustainable Resource Engineering, or a similar science field Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainable Resource Engineering, Microbiology, or related.  

 

Other requirements/qualifications: 

 

  • Minimum 1 year of experimental design experience in bio-cementation, MICP, or EICP 

  • At least 3 years of experience in theoretical Biotechnology for Resource Engineering, organizing and managing research data, ensuring accuracy and proper documentation  

  • Experience managing multiple projects to success 

  • Oversight and Coordination skills, the ability to liaise with team members, management, and clients to ensure projects are completed to standard. 

  • Ability to Identify risks and form contingency plans as soon as possible. 

  • Excellent knowledge of UV/Vis Spectroscopy; Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS); X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD); X-ray fluorescence (XRF); Phase-contrast Fluorescence Microscope; High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC); Ion chromatography (IC); Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Zeta potential. 

  • Working or theoretical knowledge of non-destructive tests (UCS-Instron, Falcon, Needle penetration)  

  • Practical experience in dealing with advanced microbial techniques (microbial culture, isolation, purification, storage, etc.); Gel electrophoresis (SDS-Native PAGE), and FTIR/ICP analysis. 

  • Good communication skills: ability to simplify complex; ability to translate technical concepts into simple terms 

  • Willingness to challenge others/critical thinking. 

 

Job Terms: 

 

Full-time, permanent position for a 40-hour work week. 

Salary: $110,000 annually
